Have a smash(burger)ing good time!

It’s probably no surprise that here at Food Holes we like ourselves some hot meat. Beef, sausage, chicken and of course bacon, to name a few.

When a burger craving hits, it’s nice to know that Calgary has some sweet burger lover offerings up in here. Boogie’s, Five Guys, Fat Burger, Burger Inn the list goes on and on. One of the newer joints in town which is fast becoming a favourite is Smash Burger just off 32nd Avenue NE.

Cooked to order, Smash Burger’s are hot, fresh and loaded with toppings. On my latest occasion I was accompanied by my dad, who also happens to be a fan of hot meat (must run in the family). We arrived at around 11:30 a.m. expecting the joint to be fairly quiet but alas, not. They always say choose the place with the longest line for the best snackage and Smash Burger is no exception as even at that early lunch hour there was a line almost out the door.

I’d had Smash Burger delivered to me before but this was my first dining-in experience. I was happier than a pig in, well, mud, when I ordered a fountain pop and the till lady handed me one of those retro, red plastic glasses that conjured memories of trips to Bonanza back in the day.

Papa Bear went with the regular Spicy Baja (burgers also come in a larger size) for $5.99. The Spicy Baja comes complete with pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, spicy chipotle mayo and fresh jalapenos. A bit of a spicy enthusiast, he was very pleased with the kick of the fresh jalapenos and made several “whooo” noises due both to joy and the hot, sweet pain of a spicy burger. He had a side of Smashfries ($2.29) which include rosemary, olive oil and garlic and was definitely a fan.

I chose the Calgary Burger ($5.99) complete with lettuce, tomato, cheese, grilled onions and bacon. My tomatoes were a little wilty so I gave them the boot but the burger was damn tasty. It was hot and fresh and perfectly seasoned and the toppings didn’t have to compete with each other to make me know they were there. I went with the Sweet Potato Smash Fries ($2.29) and a side of chipotle mayo (FREE!). The fries were darn tasty but (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) were a tidge too greasy.
